Honda Ridgeline enters second generation
After making a debut earlier in the year at the 2016 North American International Auto Show, Honda is getting set to release the second genation 2017 Ridgeline this summer. These are a few of the major changes for the unique midsize pickup.
Design
There are big modifications in the looks department — gone is the sloping rear quarter panel, replaced by a more traditional three-box design. The headlamps are shapelier and all lighting, both exterior and interior, is now available with LED technology.
A longer (+99 millimetres) and wider (+140 mm) bed means the vehicle is more versatile than ever. Besides being able to haul more, it’s a got a cool Dual-Action Tailgate that can drop down or swing open, a flat-floored In-Bed Trunk, and a built-in audio system at the back for tailgate parties.
Built on the new Global Light Truck Platform, as is the Pilot upon which the Ridgeline is based, the curb weight has been reduced by 35 kilograms while gaining 28 per cent in torsional rigidity, resulting in quieter, more fuel-efficient drive.
Performance
Under the hood is a reengineered 3.5-litre i-VTEC V6 engine producing 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, an improvement of 30 hp and 15 lb-ft respectively over the outgoing version. The motor is paired with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission that replaces the previous five-speed.
Base models are front-wheel drive, but consumers can also choose Intelligent Variable Torque Management All-Wheel Drive. A traction management system offers four AWD modes: Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand for when your adventure takes you from the open road to off-road.
If you’re planning on trailering something along as well, the Ridgeline comes standard with a Class III hitch and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Alternatively, use the hitch to attach a Honda accessory rack and carry along some bicycles to continue the fun when parked.
Comfort and Convenience
Modern Hondas are known for their practical, upscale interiors and why should that change in a truck? The cabin features soft-touch materials, a dashboard covered in stitched leatherette, and a one-touch power moonroof.
Infotainment is provided via a dual 4.2-inch Multi-Information Display and eight-inch Display Audio touchscreen. All Ridgelines receive Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Siri Eyes Free hands-free smartphone operation.
