Tires are just as important as keeping your engine in shape when it comes to vehicle maintenance. Here are some basic tire tips to keep in mind when you are planning to replace your tires.
Why You Need to Replace Tires
Safety is the number one reason tires need to be in excellent condition. You are more at risk when driving with worn-out tires or tires not fit for the season. If the tread depth is low or you are using summer tires in the snow, then you are more likely to slip and get into an accident. The environment you drive in, the road conditions, and your driving style all affect how your tires age over time.
How to Know If Tires Need Replacing
There are a few things to assess to know if your tires need to be replaced:
1. Tread Depth
The best indicator of a good tire is the tread depth. Good depth is 6/32 of an inch or deeper. Anything less than 4/32 means you should replace your tires. Legally in British Columbia, you are not allowed to drive when your tread is less than 5/32 on highways during the winter season.
2. Weather Conditions
Some of us may still have our winter tires on, but did you know that driving with winter tires when temperatures start warming up is a bad idea? This is because the tread and rubber can wear down quicker in the warmer months and winter tires do not grip as well in these hotter conditions.
3. Road Conditions
Does the area you frequently drive on have a lot of potholes or are the roads smooth? Do you use this car to go off-roading or do you mainly drive in the city? The different road conditions can give you an idea of how often you need to replace your tires.
4. Maintenance
Even regular maintenance such as rotating your tires can affect the longevity and quality of your tires. There may be instances of more tire wear on the front or the back. Regular tire rotation is key to keeping the quality of all your tires relatively the same.
