Once completed, the new largest Toyota dealership in Canada is going to be located in the Lower Mainland — right here in the Richmond Auto Mall.

OpenRoad Auto Group president and CEO Christian Chia was joined by Cyril Dimitris, VP of Toyota Canada sales and marketing as well as Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie during the ground-breaking ceremony Thursday afternoon. The rainclouds seemingly parted right over the site of the future store, the centerpiece a shiny vintage 2000GT on display from Chia’s personal collection. The sports car echoed the theme of the afternoon: history.

openroad toyota richmond 2000gt

“Some of you may not recognize this car, but we’ve come a long way since that red car, a Toyota 2000GT, rolled of the assembly line 50 years ago exactly. Things have changed a lot. What has not changed is Toyota’s commitment to quality, to sustainability and of course to reliability,” said Chia.

He drew parallels to OpenRoad’s own long-term commitment to excellence, starting with its first Toyota dealership in Richmond, a modest showroom on Granville Avenue opening in 1978. In 1985, the facility moved to the now familiar location at the auto mall. The forthcoming expansion project will be 205,000 square-feet, or five times bigger than currently.

Customers should expect amenities like two lounges, a full service café with TVs, a children’s play area, a fireplace and free Wi-Fi. Up to 36 vehicles can be displayed at once on two levels, and the service centre is set to house 30 full mechanical bays.

At a time when businesses in other retail sectors are shuttering their brick and mortars, Dimitris said the automaker has an opposing view.

“We think that the dealership is the nexus point to fulfill the guest experience, and our philosophy is strongly to create the very best guest experience in the industry,” he said.

Other highlights of the new OpenRoad Toyota Richmond include visually striking architectural design and environmentally friendly technologies such as a green roof, water collection system for the car wash, LED lighting and high efficiency heating and cooling systems.

“My family has been associated with Toyota since 1967 and I am very honoured to celebrate our chapter with Toyota for the future,” said Chia.

Sports car showcase at Los Angeles Auto Show 2017

Visitors looking for go-fast vehicles at this year’s LA Auto Show did not leave disappointed. Photos by Benjamin Yong/Porsche Canada.

Taking place in the Golden State where some of the best driving roads anywhere are found, this might be why so many new sports cars make their first appearances at the Los Angeles Auto Show (LAAS). Porsche is one manufacturer in particular that loves to drop a few high horsepower surprises at the event — which just wrapped up the second week of December — as we discuss below.

porsche_911_carrera_t

Porsche 911 Carrera T

Nope, the T doesn’t stand for turbo, as you might think. Try Touring, as in a lightweight 911 perfect for long-distance driving, say, down the Pacific Coast Highway. Porsche has been on a nostalgic kick lately, first with the 718 series and now the 911 T echoing a special model from 1968. It’s based on the standard Carrera but boasts a 20-millimetre-lower ride height, shorter shift lever, rear axle steering system, slightly revised body aero and different colour options.

The weight loss program consists of thinner door and rear window glass, less sound deadening, deleted back seats as well removal of the Porsche Communication Management (the last two may be reinstalled if requested for no extra charge). Altogether, the modifications help the car shed approximately 20 kilograms. Propulsion is provided via a twin-turbo flat six pumping out 370 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

porsche panamera turbo s e-hybrid sport turismo

Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo

Called “the most versatile sports car in the Porsche line-up,” or also known as the vehicle with the longest name, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo produces a vast net 680 horses by combining a boosted 4.0-litre V8 engine and a 100-kilowatt electric motor. The sedan has a fuel-free range of approximately 50 kilometres, a top speed of 310 km/h and an average fuel consumption of just 3.0 L/100 km.

bmw i8 roadster

BMW i8 Roadster

As if the i8 wasn’t already cool enough, BMW premiered a roof-less version in the Roadster. Only 60 kilograms heavier than the Coupe thanks to smart engineering like a carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic windshield frame. The soft-top can be raised or lowered while the car is traveling up to 50 km/h and can completely open or close in 15 seconds. Internals have been upgraded so pure electric driving range is upped to 53 kilometres.

Range Rover Sport to include plug-in hybrid option next year

The 2019 Range Rover Sport will feature an electrified variant that can travel up to 50 km/h on pure electricity.

Land Rover’s luxury mid-size SUV, the Range Rover Sport, is getting a series of enhancements for the 2018 lineup of vehicles. And, following closely behind, the model range is also about to receive its first plug-in hybrid.

Called the P400e, the partially-electric crossover is the result of a 296-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre engine mated to an 85-kilowatt electric motor, producing a combined 398 horses and 472 lb-ft of torque hooked up to a four-wheel drive system. Two driving modes are available to choose from: Parallel Hybrid, which automatically utilizes both power sources depending on driving and load conditions (a SAVE function can force gasoline propulsion to conserve battery reserves for later use), and a full-time EV mode allowing a maximum 50 kilometres of emissions-free driving at speeds of up to 137 km/h.
2019 Range Rover Sport PHEV charging

Charging the vehicle is as simple as locating the port installed behind a panel on the front grille, and illuminated strips on either side of the socket indicate the current status. When plugged in, owners are able to set a timer and choose when the process should begin and end.

The P400e features the same refreshed exterior as stablemates with the V6 and V8 engines. Both the headlights and taillights have been upgraded to LEDs and the housings slimmed down and elongated, and the air cooling vents on the front bumper are enlarged. A bigger liftgate spoiler makes a splashier statement while helping to keep dirt off the rear window. A new appearance package adds carbon fibre accents to the grille, fender vent, hood and other areas of the body.

2019 Range Rover Sport PHEV gesture control

Venturing inwards, occupants will find more supportive seating, increased storage capacity in the centre console and a gesture controlled sunroof sunblind, activated with the wave of a hand in front of the rear-view mirror. In addition, an air cleaning system called Nanoe ionizes airborne particles causing them to cling to surfaces rather than float about in the cabin.

Look for the hybrid to arrive in summer of 2018.

Top affordable vehicles available with heated seats

Maybe with the exception of a mug of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s night, there’s nothing as comforting as the embrace of a heated car seat during the chilly season. And unlike years past where this feature was reserved for luxury brands and/or range-topping models, consumers will be pleased to hear it’s becoming more common across a wide range of segments and trims. Here are some of the best examples.

2018 Honda Fit Sport

Honda Fit

This past summer, the versatile Fit hatchback received a facelift with new styling and the addition of a Sport offering boasting a body kit and a bright Orange Fury paint option. But even the LX grade, one step above base, receives front heated seats to keep occupants toasty.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen Jetta

The most affordable entry in VW’s lineup is the Jetta packing an ultra-efficient 1.4-litre turbocharged TSI engine, now including standard 16-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights and a backup camera. Bumping the entry Trendline sedan to Trendline+ adds not just heated seats, but heated exterior mirrors too.

2017 Mazda3 sedan

Mazda3

There are a lot of things going for the Mazda3: the lauded SKYACTIV technology, an available precise-shifting six-speed manual transmission and gorgeous KODO Soul of Motion design. The GS tier allows customers to enjoy heated seats, and surprisingly at a starting price of $20,300, also a heated leather steering wheel.

2017 Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai Elantra

If we’re talking about bang for buck, the Elantra wins hands down. At an MSRP of only $15,999, the compact four-door comes with the sought-after heated front seats and door mirrors. Spend an additional $4,350 and level up to the GL model for a heated leather steering wheel, or $6,700 to GLS to extend automatic seat warming to rear passengers as well.

Hyundai teases next-generation hydrogen vehicle ahead of launch

It’s only been three years since Hyundai showed Canadians that a production hydrogen-powered passenger vehicle is viable with the Tucson FCEV crossover, but the Korean automaker has already shared some details of its next attempt at the genre.

The gasoline-free SUV doesn’t yet have a name, as the launch won’t be until a few months into 2018. The styling has clearly been influenced by the smooth and organic-looking FE concept shown last March during the Geneva Motor Show. The same understated and flowing organic body lines are there, and indeed Hyundai says the “pure and serene” design is inspired by nature, or more specifically, water, the model’s only by-product. Unique styling elements like the flush door handles and contoured two-piece wheels are all purposeful to minimize drag and increase aerodynamics.

Powertrain specifics aren’t yet available, but we know the fuel cell efficiency has been increased nine per cent now yielding an estimated driving range of over 580 kilometres. Output gains a boost by an impressive 20 per cent, to 161 horsepower. Cold start capability is improved as well, and this forthcoming example can fire up at temperatures as low as -30 C.

“With exceptional efficiency, serene styling, and uncompromised performance, our next generation fuel cell SUV is the true epitome of an eco-friendly vehicle of the future,” said Lee Ki-sang, senior vice president of Hyundai Motor Group’s Eco Technology Center. “Hyundai Motor will take the lead in developing and producing green energy vehicles that would ultimately complement a near-zero emission society.”

The clean crossover is part of the manufacturer’s plan of releasing a total of 31 eco-friendly products (electric, hybrid and fuel cell) — between itself and Kia — to market by 2020. For example, the compact Kona SUV will be offered in EV form next year featuring a range of 390 kilometres.

More information, including the offical name, is expected to be revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Cutting edge concepts at Tokyo Motor Show 2017

Honda Sports EV rear

This Honda Sports EV concept was one of many beautifully designed examples unveiled at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show.

Next-level design is what the 2017 edition of the Tokyo Motor Show is all about. We’ve rounded up the boldest of the bunch in the form of concept cars currently on display until Nov. 5 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre.

Mazda Kai concept

Mazda Kai

Embodying a more evolved form of the KODO design language, this smoothed over compact hatchback might very well be a next-gen Mazda3. Though the slammed suspension and massive wheels likely wouldn’t make their way through production if that really were the case, the combination certainly looks awesome on the concept.

Honda Sports EV front

Honda Sports EV

Remember the boxy Urban EV Concept debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show a few months ago? The Sports EV Concept is the squashed and stretched out fastback version, clearly influenced by iconic Hondas of old such as the S600 Coupe. Don’t hold your breath on picking one up if it’s made however, unless you already live in Japan.

Toyota GR HV Sports

Toyota GR HV Sports

With borrowed elements from the TS050 Hybrid created for the World Endurance Championship auto racing series, the GR HV Sports is purposed as an eco-friendly sports car for the street. Sprayed matte black, this partially electric two-door features a targa top, rear-wheel drive and transmission selection buttons uniquely mounted in series on the centre stack.

Mazda Vision concept

Mazda Vision Coupe

The Hiroshima-based manufacturer makes this list twice with a second unveil at the show: the Vision Coupe, which, surprise, is actually a full-length sedan. It’s considered to be of the same lineage as the RX-Vision concept from 2015 and is meant to show off just how aesthetically appealing Mazda can make a vehicle. The exterior styling is called “one motion,” intended to evoke a sense of elegant speed.

Jaguar shows true mettle with Art of Performance Tour 2017

There are a lot of lofty claims being made by automakers these days of what their products are capable of, especially in the luxury segment where performance and comfort are paramount. The issue is, most of the time a potential customer will never be able to really evaluate the former on a standard test drive — that’s where the Jaguar Art of Performance Tour comes in.

jaguar art of performance tour 2017 tent

The traveling free event has stops in key Canadian cities, most recently visiting the west in Richmond B.C. The idea is simple: give vehicle shoppers some actual seat time in the most popular and fun models including the F-PACE crossover, compact XE sedan and of course, the F-TYPE sports car.

“In full transparency, here’s what we hope as a manufacturer this event does: we hope that we take the first 25 minutes to geek out about the brand so we get some baseline understanding of what it is we’re here to look at. And then we take the next two hours and we put you in a situation where you get exposure to what we feel like are the best vehicles that we have,” said Jaguar facilitator Brett Bogart.

jaguar_art_of_performance_tour_2017_e-pace

His preliminary history lesson covered topics like the company’s early roots as a motorcycle sidecar builder, then known as Swallow Sidecar; the sales struggles faced a decade ago; and the current scenario where the brand has been churning out hit after hit. Bogart even touched on the forthcoming E-PACE, which was brought along for display purposes, a hotly-anticipated turbocharged 2.0-litre mini SUV arriving in stores shortly.

In the meantime, enthusiasts are getting their crossover fix in the F-PACE. Jaguar wanted to prove the point that the 340-horses under the hood weren’t just for show through a tight slalom set up in the parking lot. People paired up and took turns feeling out how the SUV behaved weaving around cones and sweeping turns, and the answer is so well some occupants couldn’t believe they were in a utility vehicle.

jaguar art of performance tour 2017 f-pace

“Most markets are gravitating towards SUVS and crossover SUVs, but we want you to hold us accountable for is whether we’ve built you a vehicle that still lives up to your grand expectations of what you feel like a Jaguar should be. Which is why we’ve put you in the largest SUV we have and we put you out in an autocross course to kind of hold our feet to the fire of whether we’ve been able to do that,” said Bogart.

Similarly, to demonstrate the handling prowess of the newest and smallest sedan in the lineup, the XE. Rather than plain orange cones such as the ones used in the other exercise, Jaguar set up a series of proprietary “Smart Cones” equipped with LED lights designed to fire off in a randomized pattern alerting drivers where to head next in the course. Not only keeping participants on their toes, it showed the car was fully capable of easily making sudden emergency-like manoeuvres, helped no doubt by the body made from three-quarters lightweight aluminum.

jaguar art of performance tour 2017 f-type

The cherry atop the performance tour was the activity centered on the F-TYPE. Professional drivers were employed to pilot a pair of SVRs — the fastest production offering in the lineup making 575 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque via a supercharged V8 mill — with a passenger alongside for the ride. The in-house Special Vehicle Operations-tuned rocket ships on wheels could be heard a mile away as they performed hot laps for gleeful guests, almost all of whom exited with silly grins and weak knees.

Top five manufacturer unveils at SEMA Show 2017

The SEMA Show held annually in Las Vegas typically draws more than 60,000 visitors every year.

The Speciality Equipment Market Association (SEMA) just wrapped another show in Sin City, putting on display the wildest things to come out of the auto industry both from the OEM and aftermarket sectors. OpenRoad has rounded up some mouth-watering performance dishes served up by manufacturers at this year’s event.

Toyota CH-R R-Tuned

Toyota CH-R R-Tuned

Toyota has dubbed this little crossover “the worlds quickest CUV,” which indeed pushes big power from a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine running 23 psi of boost. DG-Spec modified the CH-R to produce 600 horsepower, resulting in quicker lap times than a Porsche 911 GT3 at Willow Springs International Raceway.

Hyundai HyperEconiq Ioniq

Hyundai HyperEconiq Ioniq

The Seoul-based automaker regularly teams up with Bisimito Engineering to unveil something truly hair-raising for SEMA, like 2015’s 700-horsepower Sonata. Now, however, it’s a greener project called the HyperEconiq, a slammed, kitted-out Ioniq that achieves a combined city/highway fuel economy of 2.9 L/100 km.

Audi TT clubsport turbo concept

Channelling the Audi 90 IMSA GTO racecar circa 1989, the TT clubsport turbo concept gives the coupe an entirely different look wearing boxy fenders, a manually adjustable carbon fibre polymer wing and an overall 140-millimetre wider presence. The uprated turbo motor propels the coupe from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.

Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha concept

Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha concept

The grade-topping Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 is already considered quite quick utilizing a 400-horsepower boosted 3.0-litre V6 making 350 lb-ft of torque. But that hasn’t stopped the luxury brand from enlisting the services of AMS Performance to upgrade the intercooler, exhaust, ECU and other items — many soon to be available for purchase at dealerships and AMS distributors — increasing horsepower by 19 per cent and torque, 29 per cent.

BMW M3 30 Years American Edition

BMW M3 30 Years American Edition

A little over three decades ago, an automotive icon was born: the M3. And then one year later, the vehicle reached our shores. To commemorate the anniversary, BMW Group Designworks and BMW Individual have created the 30 Years American Edition featuring a red, white and blue colour theme and a whole bunch of M Performance parts from an adjustable suspension system to a handmade carbon fibre rear spoiler complete with racing stripes.

Best of Canadian Car of the Year 2018 program

As is the case every October, writers and broadcasters from all over Canada gathered in Clarington, Ontario last week for one reason and one reason only: the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) program. This is where some of the newest vehicles from several manufacturers were made available in one place for thoughtful evaluation – on regular roads, highways and a high-speed test track — so that the 2018 CCOTY winners can be determined. These are five of the standout models in different categories from the event.

2018 Hyundai Ioniq Electric Plus

Hyundai Ioniq Electric Plus (Small Car)

After a successful release of the Ioniq Hybrid and Electric, Hyundai is releasing the third and final electrified variant of the platform: the Electric Plus plug-in hybrid. Offering the best of both worlds, the PHEV allows up to 40 kilometres of pure electric driving and has an onboard 1.6-litre four-cylinder internal combustion engine ready to provide assistance for longer distance trips.

2018 Infiniti Q60 Sport

Infiniti Q60 Sport (Small Premium Car)

Beautifully sculpted and boasting a trio of powertrain options, the Infiniti Q60 is a worthy successor to the much-loved G37 Coupe. Positioned smack in the middle of the trim range is the Sport, packing a silky-smooth 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 under the hood generating 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Other highlights include standard Dynamic Digital (electronic) Suspension and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

2018 Toyota Camry XSE

Toyota Camry XSE (Large Car)

As good a car as the Camry is, excitement isn’t usually the word people think of when Toyota announces a new version. The 2018 is truly another story as it has experienced a full redesign. The XSE grade is styled the most excitingly of the bunch with large blacked out central mesh grille, body kit, 19-inch machined-finish alloy wheels and features an available 301-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine.

2018 Porsche Panamera

Porsche Panamera Turbo (Large Premium Car)

This second-generation luxury sports sedan from Porsche was made to form a closer link, both in appearance and performance, to the iconic 911. With a more coupe-like roofline and front/rear fascias, the twin-turbo V8 Panamera generates 550 horsepower that will take anyone’s breath away during full acceleration. The three-piece active rear spoiler is also a thing of beauty.

2018 Honda Civic Type-R

Honda Civic Type-R (Sports-Performance Car)

Believe they hype — the first Type-R to grace North American shores is the real deal. The 306-horsepower turbocharged i-VTEC mill, Brembo brake calipers and adaptive damping suspension system should be a clue as to how the CTR was able to achieve the title of world’s fastest production front-wheel drive car at Germany’s famed Nürburgring racetrack.

Jaguar adds 575-horsepower XJR575 to 2018 lineup

The XJR575 is not your regular luxury sedan.

Get ready Jaguar fans — as part of the 2018 model year updates to the flagship XJ, the lineup is getting the addition of a new range-topping performance trim.

Sounding like the codename for a ballistic missile rather than a luxury sedan, the XJR575 — the last three numbers denote its horsepower — features two unique colours mixed up by the folks at the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) as well as body aero enhancements, upsized wheels, interior flourishes and a more powerful engine.

2018 Jaguar XJR575 rear

“The Jaguar XJ has a number of roles to fulfill. It must remain exciting to drive but also be incredibly compliant and comfortable,” said design director Ian Callum. “This all starts with the way the vehicle looks. Our advanced Lightweight Aluminum Architecture means we are able to create a vehicle that has an authoritative yet elegant stance. Inside, absolute precision is a prerequisite — exceptional craftsmanship ensures all occupants experience the feeling of ultimate luxury and refinement.”

2018 Jaguar XJR575 mountain road

Doing away with all the chrome accenting on the front bumper, the XJR575 instead uses a gloss black treatment for the grille and air intake surrounds for a cleaner and meaner appearance. The trunk features a subtle lip spoiler and below, quad tailpipes. Other differentiators include the gloss-black split-spoke alloys and red brake calipers. Behind the wheel, drivers enjoy diamond-quilted-covered sport seats featuring extra bolstering for extra support, and 575 is branded underneath the headrests as well as the dashboard and brushed aluminum door sills.

2018 Jaguar XJ575 interior

Start up the car, and the familiar Jaguar Land Rover supercharged 5.0-litre powerplant, mated to an eight-speed automatic ZF transmission, rumbles to life. Engineers have done some tinkering to boost the output to 575 horses and 517 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.2 seconds and a dizzying top speed of 300 km/h.

Also standard on the XJR575 is electric power assisted steering and a bundle of safety technologies like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and assist and a system that monitors driver fatigue.
