OpenRoad Auto Group helps out single mom

METRO VANCOUVER – A car dealership in Richmond will donate a $9,500 car to a single mom this afternoon after her vehicle was stolen outside her East Vancouver apartment over the Christmas holidays.

OpenRoad Hyundai Richmond is holding an event at 4 p.m. to present Jane Scott with a 2006 Hyundai Tuscon and complimentary oil change for three years.

Scott’s 1999 Chrysler Intrepid, purchased by her parents for $1,300, was stolen from the alley outside her East Vancouver apartment and taken for a joyride to Surrey where it was found destroyed.

OpenRoad management wanted to do something to give back to the community and help someone in need, according to Larry Cho, general manager of OpenRoad Hyundai Richmond. Then, they read about Scott’s plight in The Vancouver Sun on Dec. 30., and contacted Scott the same day.

The Tuscon is worth about $9,500, Cho said. Scott has her own crowdfunding page, which as of Tuesday morning had raised $4,775,

None of the money raised by Scott has been paid to OpenRoad Hyundai, according to Cho.

Vancouver police told her the thieves had taken it on a wild ride, speeding to North Vancouver, robbing a 7-11 in Burnaby and finally smashing it into a “Welcome to Surrey” sign at the south end of the Pattullo Bridge before scampering off into the night.

Scott told The Sun that she had planned to buy comprehensive insurance for the Chrysler when her current plan ran out Jan. 3.
