The Spring-Summer Car Maintenance Checklist
The weather is finally clearing up and what better way to start the season than “spring cleaning” your car! Vehicle maintenance can be overwhelming for some and most of us tend to put it off which is why we’ve listed out the most important things to do for your car during this seasonal change.
1. Tires
If you haven’t already, switch your winter tires for all-season or summer tires. You should be using the appropriate tires for each season to prevent tire wear and damage to your vehicle. Using your winter tires for the warmer months will not be effective and could be dangerous.
While you’re at it, be sure to check your tire pressure and tread depth to ensure that the tires are safe for the road conditions ahead. To further extend the lifespan of your tires, rotating them at this step would be a good idea as well.
2. Oil
Oil changes are one of the most important things you can do for your car. Keeping up with oil changes every 3-6 months (or every 8,000 to 16,000 km) helps keep your car’s engine healthy. Oils naturally pick up impurities as it lubricates so replenishing this ensures your car is running in top condition.
3. Brakes
Having driven your car in the rougher winter conditions may have potentially caused some harm to your braking system. Making sure your brakes are in good shape before driving can not only save you some money from more costly damage but can also keep you and others on the road safe.
4. Wipers
Snow, hail, ice, and other debris from the winter season can take a toll on your wipers. If you start to see streaks across your windshield even after you’ve cleaned your wipers, it’s time to switch them out. Some of our service departments are offering free wiper installation to help you out.
5. Battery
Lower temperatures can be hard on your battery. This is because cooler temperatures slow down the chemical reactions inside your battery making them weaker. To avoid any mishaps or that dreaded feeling when your car won’t start, have your battery checked by a mechanic.
6. General Checks
Some other good practices you can do would be to clean out your mats from the winter debris, check any cracks on your windshields and mirrors, test all of your interior and exterior lights, and test the air conditioning system in your vehicle. It will do no harm to do a full detailing as well since with winter comes salt and ice that are damaging to your car.
