Best vehicles for Halloween candy runs

Make trick or treating go smoother this year with one of these Halloween-approved vehicles.

Boo! It’s almost that time again to dig out the decorations and costumes for the scariest day of the year. And something else you may need is a proper vehicle for tasks such as shuttling kids to a trick or treating destination, or transporting friends and family to a Halloween party. We’ve put together a top three list of the perfect models to accompany All Hallow’s Eve.

lexus nx 200t lava orange

Lexus NX 200t F SPORT

This subcompact crossover by Lexus was built for Halloween: the gaping mesh grill, sharp headlights and metallic bumper spoiler all look like they were modelled after the alien from the Predator films. Oh, and it also comes in bright Lava Orange. Kidding aside, the NX 200t is great for candy runs since there are four compartments underneath the cargo floor to stash valuables out of sight, and lots of storage space up front in the large glove and console boxes, as well as the door pockets.

Hyundai Elantra

The streets will be littered with kids and grownups alike on Oct. 31, making driving potentially more dangerous than usual. Being behind the wheel of a proven safe car — for example the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ 2017 Hyundai Elantra — would be a wise choice. In addition to performing well in crash tests, the compact car has hands-free technology for making and taking calls, and an optional automatic emergency braking system capable of detecting pedestrians.

Kids can be messy — especially kids with a bag full of candy. But why wait to get home to tidying up crumbs and dirt when you can do it on the road? Toyota’s best-selling minivan now features an available on-board vacuum cleaner for on-the-go cleaning. Stowed neatly away in the rear of the vehicle, the hose can reach any part of the cabin, and the unit is operable whether the engine is on or off. Three attachments are included for getting into nooks and crannies.

Genesis G70 compact luxury sport sedan arrives next year

The G70 is the smallest and sportiest offering by Genesis yet.

Following the releases of the G90 flagship and mid-size G80, Genesis is completing the trifecta with the launch of the G70 compact luxury sedan two weeks ago in South Korea. With expressive lines, big brakes, limited slip differential and a choice of two forced induction engines, this model is intended to be the sportiest — looking at least, as we can’t forget about the G80 Sport — of the trio.

“At Genesis, we shape fascination and desire with the passion, dedication, and talent from our designers. We modulated all parameters from the Genesis DNA to tailor a sport sedan. This challenge required the highest skills and know-how. The G70 is designed to captivate all senses with its sensuous and tensioned muscular volumes,” said head of design Luc Donckerwolke.

Aesthetically, the car has a low and long hood, sloping roof and short overhangs emphasizing its performance-oriented purpose. The second to bear a mesh front grille after the G80 sport, on either side are combination LED headlamps and quad stacked daytime running lights. Behind the front wheels are airflow vents, and out back are a raised trunk lid, G80-inspired LED taillights and dual exhaust pipes.

Premium simplicity is how one might describe the interior. Designers have used a lot of aluminum and metal in the dash, centre console and door panels that give off an air of sophistication, as do the quilted Nappa leather seating surfaces and door cards. A few physical controls and a freestanding display make up the majority of the centre stack.

The two powerplants mentioned earlier are a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder and a twin-turbo 3.3-litre V6, the former making 249 horsepower/260-lb-ft of torque and the latter 365 horsepower/376 lb-ft. Some less-than-expected features for the segment include launch control, a cornering system capable of applying light brake force to the inside rear wheel and a mechanical limited slip differential to help with acceleration out of turns.

The 2018 Genesis G70 arrives in Canada this spring.

Remember to Slow Down, Move Over

BCAA and ICBC want to remind drivers of the rules when approaching flashing lights on the road.

Pop quiz: do you know what to do when you spot a vehicle stopped on the road with flashing red, blue or yellow lights? If you answered, “Slow down and move over,” then you are correct. In B.C., that’s actually the law, one that was put in place to protect people like tow truck drivers, maintenance and utility crews and emergency responders while they do their jobs.

The proper procedure after spotting such a scenario while driving is to first slow your speed down to 70 km/h in an 80 km/h or above zone, or if below 80, reducing to 40 km/h. Afterwards, if it is safe to do so, move into the open lane going the same direction and drive past. Not doing so can result in a fine of $173 as well as three demerit points.

In the summer, BCAA commissioned a survey on the subject showing nearly half of respondents have witnessed motorists speeding by a roadside scene. More than 80 per cent of those surveyed did not know exactly how fast they should be going in such a scenario. Most also believe being in a rush and/or distracted driving contributed to the problem.

There are tools available to help plan out a route so you don’t get surprised by roadwork or an accident. Online resources like Google Maps work great to look at what’s going on in the streets before you leave the house, or many vehicles on the market today actually factor in live traffic information.

bmw connecteddrive

Jaguar models, for example, equipped with the available InControl TouchPro Connected Navigation infotainment system monitors traffic flow in real time, revealing an accurate travel time to a destination. Similarly, virtually all BMWs now have the option of adding ConnectedDrive, which knows where the delays are happening. Its Advanced Real Time Traffic Information technology gathers intel from the cellular network, GPS data from vehicle fleets, smartphone apps and even police reports and is accurate to within 100 metres. Detours are recommended as necessary.

BMW launches first all-wheel drive M5

BMW has introduced an all-wheel drive system into the M5 sports sedan, which is customizable to the driver’s preferences.

As BMW prepares to release the sixth generation of the high octane M5, let’s dive into what makes this newest chapter of the sports sedan extra special: M xDrive technology. The tailor-made all-wheel drive system retains classic rear-wheel characteristics while adding in loads of grip as needed, in a manner never quite done before.

“The core component of M xDrive is a central intelligence unit with M-specific software delivering integrated control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The new drivetrain technology — making its debut on the new BMW M5 — therefore combines all of the agility and precision of standard rear-wheel drive with the supreme poise and traction of the all-wheel-drive system,” said company representative Frank van Meel.

“As a result, the new BMW M5 can be piloted with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy on both the race track and the open road. And in various weather conditions, too.”

2018 BMW M5

The setup provides five available modes, depending on whether Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is active. By default, 4WD with DSC is on, which still allows a certain amount of slippage to the back wheels, but will send power up front as needed for situations such as accelerating out of a turn. For tail-happy fun, though, drivers will want to switch over to M Dynamic Mode. The rear is allowed to slip even further, capable of carrying out a controlled drift in the right environment.

M xDrive is made possible via a pairing of specific software and two mechanical components: the transfer case and the Active M Differential. The former is responsible for distributing power front to rear, the latter then balancing out forces between the two rear wheels. All of this is done with nearly zero losses.

2018 BMW M5 engine

A refined version of BMW’s 4.4-litre biturbo V8 propels the upcoming M5 and features upgraded turbochargers, better cooling and a new, lighter exhaust system. An efficient eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with paddle shifters is mated to the engine, geared to provide improved fuel economy estimated at 10.5 L/100 km in mixed city and highway use.

2018 Hyundai Kona

Hyundai Kona

Better late than never, Hyundai enters the competitive subcompact crossover arena with the introduction of the Kona. The aggressively styled four-wheel drive vehicle adopts the brand’s new Cascading Grille design, comprised of a mesh centre flanked on both sides by fender arches that bleed onto the front bumper. Powering this little SUV are two powertrains — a 2.0-litre mated to six-speed automatic, and a turbocharged 1.6-litre with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

2018 Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The third generation Porsche Cayenne is serious business — it’s powered by a biturbo 4.0-litre V8 capable of getting the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds, and all the way up to a 286 km/h top speed. The Cayenne sits on an adjustable three-chamber air suspension system that can be adjusted to six different height levels, and the rear liftgate features a neat active spoiler inspired by its sports car siblings.

Honda Urban EV Concept

Honda Urban EV

Setting the direction for a future battery electric Honda car expected to launch in Europe in 2019, the Urban EV Concept almost resembles an ultra-futuristic version of the first Civic hatchback. Where a grille would traditionally be on the tiny hatchback is a customizable panel for displaying greetings or charging status. There is also backlit blue Honda emblem soon to be a signature item on other EVs to come.

The concept’s interior is simple and uncluttered. There’s seating for four, a main panoramic display screen and supplementary screens on both door panels acting as digital side mirrors.

Top three minivans for parents

As September has rolled around, parents will once again be turning into a transportation service for their kids taking them to school, band practice and wherever else their extracurricular activities will take them. With their sliding doors and plethora of other modern conveniences, there is still no better vehicle to accomplish the task than the minivan. Below are three models that deserve some special attention.

2018 Toyota Sienna

2018 Toyota Sienna

A perennial favourite, the Toyota Sienna just received a brand new powertrain last year. It consists of a new 3.5-litre V6 engine, rated at 296 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which was an upgrade from the previous six-speed.

For 2018, the seven seater (or eight, depending on configuration) receives Toyota Safety Sense P pre-collision safety system across all trims. The front grille and foglight recesses have been enlarged and side sill rockers added for extra swag points. There are now five USB ports in the cabin for charging electronics, and Limited grade owners enjoy a 360-degree Bird’s Eye View camera.

2017 Mazda5

2017 Mazda5

This mini-minivan provides an option for those who would like a family vehicle with a slightly smaller footprint. Mazda calls the six-passenger Mazda5 a “Multi-Activity Vehicle” with lots of neat features not commonly found in the segment, like the availability of a six-speed manual transmission and fold-out storage trays inspired by bento boxes stashed underneath the second row sliding/reclining captain’s chairs.

2018 honda odyssey

2018 Honda Odyssey

It’s true, the redesigned 2018 Odyssey has been covered in a previous post, but we simply couldn’t leave out this modernized offering from Honda. Unique technologies make it easy for parents to keep tabs on their little passengers in the back.

For example, CabinWatch relays real-time images from an interior camera pointed at the rear seats to the eight-inch infotainment screen, and CabinTalk allows the driver to speak to people sitting in the second and third row through the stereo speaker system or rear entertainment headphones.

Jaguar glimpses into future with new concept car

The year 2040 comes early for Jaguar following their announcement of the FUTURE-TYPE concept car, which the English automaker imagines could be a reality by the future date. Supporting both autonomous and manual driving modes, the real story here is that its users may actually only own the steering wheel, sharing the rest of the vehicle with the community.

Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE Sayer steering wheel

Called Sayer, named after the FUTURE-TYPE’s designer, the removable wheel is intelligent, voice-activated and acts as a control centre for the car, as well a sophisticated virtual assistant. Like a more advanced version of Apple’s Siri, Sayer can make reservations for you at a restaurant, tell you if you’re running low on milk, and of course, summon your car.

Unlike traditional vehicle shopping, prospective FUTURE-TYPE customers would join a fee-based club. Members can either opt for sole ownership, or choose to let others use the car during periods of inactivity.

“FUTURE-TYPE offers an insight into the potential for driving and car ownership in the future. It’s partof our vision for how a luxury car brand could continue to be desirable, in a more digital and autonomous age,” said Ian Callum, Jaguar director of design.

Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE rear

“Our FUTURE-TYPE Concept is an advanced research project looking at how we can ensure an on-demand Jaguar will appeal to customers in 2040 and beyond. Whether it’s commuting to work, autonomously collecting children from school or enjoying driving yourself on the weekend in the countryside, if there’s a choice of on-demand cars driving around city streets, we need to ensure  customers desire our 24/7 service over our competitors.”

Sayer also helps to take the guesswork out of travel planning. State where you need to be at a certain hour, and it works out what time you should be ready, when to deliver the vehicle and even suggests a part of the journey that might be enjoyable for automatic steering to be switched off.

Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE side

Featuring 2+1 semi-tandem seating, occupants can more easily share a conversation or get some work done on the way to their destination. The FUTURE-TYPE will have the ability to communicate with other smart automobiles on the road allowing shorter distances between bumpers and more efficient lane changing, in turn reducing traffic congestion and preventing accidents.

BMW i3 receives performance i3s variant in 2018

BMW’s award-winning i3 is already known as one of the most fun-to-drive battery electric vehicles on the market with its torquey motor and classic German handling characteristics. It’s about to get even better when the sportier 2018 i3s arrives early next year.

Both the drive system and suspension have been upgraded and as a result there is an increase to output as well as big improvements to on-road agility. Total horsepower is now 184, and torque 199 lb-ft. The i3s sits on speciality springs, dampers and anti-roll bars giving the EV a 10 millimetre lower ride height capable of cornering much flatter than the standard variant.

Drivers can control just how sporty the experience is using the dynamics control switch. After activating the new Sport mode, the accelerator instantly becomes more responsive, and the steering firmer. In this setting, the car can get from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. A gasoline Range Extender engine remains an option.

To complement the boost in performance, the exterior is bolder than on the standard i3. To match the black roof and centre panels both on the front and rear of the vehicle, the A-pillars, parts of the BMW kidney grille and a few other trim pieces are finished in a high gloss black. Underneath the full LED headlights are coloured accent strips painted BMW I Blue or Frozen Grey that help show off the extra 40 millimetres in track width.

All i3 models benefit from the latest iDrive 6 user interface responsible for controlling everything from communications to infotainment. If equipped with the Navigation Professional, the 10.25-inch screen features a higher-resolution display. Voice commands can be executed more simply than before via Natural Language Understanding functionality. For example, the computer recognizes casual phrases such as “find the closest gas station,” similar to how smartphone voice assistants work.

More information will be available when the 2018 BMW i3S officially premieres at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt this month.

Top new cars for students going back to school

The month of September can mean only one thing: back to school. That means many students (and parents) will be shopping for a set of wheels that is safe, economical and of course, looks fantastic. The news is that manufacturers have been busy putting the finishing touches on refreshing favourites like the Toyota Prius c and Honda Fit.  These are our top picks for this year’s latest back-to-school rides.

2018 Toyota Prius c

2018 Toyota Prius c

The smallest hybrid in the Toyota lineup gets some fresh duds for the 2018 model year. The front and rear fascias have been facelifted leaving the hatchback looking the sportiest it’s been since being introduced in 2012. The headlamps are more contoured, and black aero strakes surround the foglamps. In addition, a new lower front spoiler and a hatch wing have been fitted for better airflow.

Interior pieces like the instrument panel, air conditioning controls and steering wheel have also been redesigned. A backup camera is now standard making entering and exiting parking spots a cinch. Under the hood, the familiar Hybrid Synergy Drive continues to provide a stellar 5.1 L/100 km fuel economy rating.

2017 Volkswagen e-Golf

2017 Volkswagen e-Golf

How do you make the already great VW Golf even greater? By turning it completely electric, that’s how. The EV version of the popular compact is finally available in Canada and boasts a 35.8 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery, which allows a maximum travel distance of up to 200 kilometres on a single charge. The e-Golf receives the same styling changes found on the gasoline models like LED lighting, revised bumpers and an upgraded infotainment system.

2018 Honda Fit Sport

2018 Honda Fit

Recently pulling in to showrooms this summer, Honda has added a Sport trim to the Fit family. The new addition adds some exterior garnishes such as an orange-frosted splitter underneath the nose of the car, side skirts and a rear bumper diffuser, as well as 16-inch gloss black wheels. The inside features an all-black interior with orange stitching.

Both manual and CVT (automatic) transmissions are offered, the latter includes the Honda Sensing suite of collision mitigation and driver assistance technologies.

Top five tips for young drivers and parents

Is it really back-to-school time already? As teens get ready to climb back into their cars to head to class, or perhaps shop for a new set of wheels, here are five tips for both young drivers and parents to think about before hitting the road.

1) Put down the phone

Distracted driving continues to be a major issue everywhere despite legislation being put in place to discourage the risky behaviour. Did you know those who text and drive are 23 times more likely to involved in a collision or near collision? Fortunately, most vehicles now, even entry level examples like the 2017 Toyota Corolla, come with Bluetooth connectivity. After pairing the system with a smartphone, calls and even texts can be handled hands free.

2) Use the seatbelt

Simple concept, but some people still choose not to buckle up for whatever reason. It is shown that many crashes where teenagers were behind the wheel became fatal due to their not wearing seatbelts.

3) Don’t drive while drowsy

Operating an automobile when sleepy can have the same effects as doing so under the influence of alcohol. Find a safe place to pull over and shut your eyes for a few moments if required to get refreshed. Although certain cars nowadays feature assistance technologies such as the Lane Keeping Assist System in the Honda Accord, which will automatically correct steering should the sedan drift out of a lane without signalling, it is not designed to replace careful driving.

4) Prepare for emergencies

Whether the route from home to school is a short or long one, always bring along emergency supplies in the trunk just in case. Nothing fancy is required — a pre-packaged bundle from any store is fine as long as the essentials such as a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, etc. are included.

5) Choose the right vehicle

As a parent, it can be tempting to pass an old clunker down to the kids as a first car. By no means is purchasing the latest luxury model necessary, however picking something contemporary will mean the product will possess the latest safety equipment from air bags to traction control. Have a look through OpenRoad’s extensive new and used inventory.
