EV Charging Part 2: Home Installation Checklist

In the first part of this Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers series, we took a look at the three different levels of chargers. This time, we will concentrate on the Level 2 Charger as well as the process on how to get one installed in your own home, townhouse, or apartment.

Get Permission Confirm with Technical Safety BC to see if your home is approved for installation. Obtain an electrical permit from your municipality. Contact your strata to start the installation request. Make sure to read the rules of the building and wait to receive a pre-approval from BC Hydro.
Hire Electrician or Contractor Hire a certified electrician/contractor that meets qualifications. For EV rebates, have them complete a contractor consultation form. Hire a certified electrician/contractor that meets qualifications. For EV rebates, have them complete a contractor consultation form.
Check Electrical System & Space Determine where you will place the charger and if there is sufficient space to accommodate it. Make sure there is a solid infrastructure to accommodate charging stations.
User Agreement N/A For apartments, establish an agreement for installation with other residents.
Rebate Application Once your EV charger is installed, sign the documentation required and submit your rebate online. You may submit a rebate pre-approval for purchasing and installing EV chargers. Once installed, sign the documentation required and submit your rebate online.

Installation & Inspection A safety officer must inspect the electrician’s work before any wiring is finalized. They must complete the contactor consultation form for a rebate.
