The 43rd annual Canadian International Auto Show at the Toronto Convention Centre kicks off today, with more than 1,000 cars on display. Preceding the event was the announcement of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s 2016 Canadian Car of the Year and the Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, which were the Honda Civic and the Mazda CX-3, respectively. OpenRoad has selected the highlights from the 33 new production and 11 concept models debuting this year.
Mazda’s premium mid-size CX-9 finally gets the family KODO design treatment with the signature five-point grille and windswept body panels. The wheelbase has grown by 55 millimetres since the last version, and up to seven passengers can now fit into the three-row seating with even more comfort. For the first time, the next-generation Skyactiv engine has been turbocharged to produce 227 horsepower.
Toyota Urban Utility (U2)
Making its global introduction is the U2 that, as Toyota describes it, was inspired by and designed for makers and the creative class. The urban utility concept vehicle is full of quirky features like custom graphics and interior colours, flip up side windows, a folding tailgate that turns into a ramp and an easily removable front passenger seat.
Volkswagen GTI Roadster
Literally straight out of a videogame, the GTI Roadster was originally conceived in computer form only for the Sony Playstation title Gran Turismo 6. Elements of the regular GTI are definitely present, but this example has been enhanced by loads of carbon fibre, a race-ready interior and a 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 making 503 horsepower.
After the big news that Genesis was going to be splitting amicably from Hyundai as a standalone luxury brand, the marque’s first product, the full-size G90 sedan, was unveiled at CIAS. A release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but customers will have two options: a 3.3 L V6 or a 5.0 L V8.
Called a lifestyle crossover, the three-door Enduro concept looks striking with an exaggerated Hyundai hexagon grille and gargantuan black fender flares. Air blades have been fitted to the front fenders and C-pillars for increased aerodynamics. Elements of motorcycles have influenced its design, from the spoke-and-handle steering wheel to the off-road bike door handles.
